The Czech Republic has opposed new EU sanctions against Israel — Foreign Ministry
Czech Foreign Minister Petr Maťinka stated that the country will not support the imposition of new European Union trade sanctions against Israel. According to him, the Czech Republic is prepared, if necessary, to single-handedly block such decisions within the EU.
He made these remarks during a joint press conference with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar, as reported by CTK.
According to Macinka, the Czech Republic will not allow the suspension of the Association Agreement between the EU and Israel, while Saar, in turn, stated that the governments of some European countries are harming the EU’s relations with Israel, whereas the Czech Republic, on the contrary, is a true friend.
The European Union recently agreed to impose new sanctions against Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank. This proposal had been under discussion for some time, and all 27 EU member states had to approve it unanimously.
The Czech minister called the current EU proposal for a sanctions package “compromising,” particularly due to the lack of restrictions against Israeli politicians. He also emphasized that the Czech Republic considers any attempts to freeze the EU’s association agreement with Israel unacceptable.
"Our position on this will be a clear 'no,'" he said.
