Bangkok Declared a Natural Disaster Area Due to Widespread Flooding — Reuters
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, has been declared a natural disaster area following widespread flooding caused by heavy rains. The city received nearly 300 mm of rainfall over two days, and the meteorological agency warned of more thunderstorms over the weekend.
Due to the bad weather, the capital’s main roads were submerged, and cars were partially flooded. On some streets, the water level rose to waist height.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that the situation poses a “risk to human life” and could cause damage to public and private property. According to him, the most critical situation is near the canals.
The Thai Army is setting up shelters and field kitchens for those affected. Bangkok authorities have designated schools as temporary shelters and urged residents to avoid non-essential travel.
Amid the flooding, supermarkets have been flooded with people stocking up on food and other essential goods. The government has also issued an emergency warning to residents of areas near the canals, urging them to move their belongings to higher ground.
Meanwhile, Bangkok’s main airport, Suvarnabhumi, is operating as usual. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has advised travelers to allow an extra two to three hours for their trip to the airport due to heavy traffic.
Flooding is a seasonal problem for Thailand. In November 2025, the country experienced one of the worst floods in recent decades—at least 145 people died, and thousands of homes in the southern provinces were damaged.
