Due to the heat wave, 845 schools and colleges in France will be closed

On Monday, 845 schools and colleges in France will temporarily close due to the extreme heat. Another 1,800 or so schools will shorten the school day and send students home early.

According to Education Minister Édouard Geoffroy, most of the closed schools are located in departments where the highest—red—level of weather danger has been declared.

He emphasized that the decision to close schools will be made primarily with the safety of children and school staff in mind.

In addition, the Île-de-France regional government will allocate 1 million euros to purchase fans, water misting systems, and other equipment to cool exam centers.

In Spain, May 2026 was a record-breakingly difficult month due to a heat wave that claimed the lives of at least 101 people. This is the highest figure for this month in the last 11 years of records, and it is more than three times the average for the previous decade. Authorities attribute the rise in mortality specifically to the impact of extremely high temperatures.
