French and German lawmakers have called for stepping up the fight against Russia's shadow fleet
Members of the German and French parliaments have launched a joint initiative to strengthen measures against Russia’s “shadow fleet.” The document is scheduled to be adopted on June 22 at a session of the Franco-German Parliamentary Assembly.
The draft addresses the need for stricter controls over such vessels, their detention in the event of legal violations, and increased diplomatic pressure on the countries under whose flags they sail.
The authors of the initiative emphasize that the “shadow fleet” poses not only a geopolitical threat but also an environmental and security threat, as many tankers are in poor technical condition. In addition, some vessels may be used for espionage or sabotage.
“Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ threatens not only the effectiveness of our sanctions but also the security of Europe and our critical infrastructure. We must respond to this together,” said Bundestag Member Jürgen Hardt.
