Denmark has selected the European SAMP/T air defense system to defend the country

Denmark has decided to purchase the European SAMP/T NG air defense system and will become the third EU country to use it.

According to Thales, a member of the manufacturing consortium, the contract calls for the delivery of the first modules in 2028. The system will also include a Ground Fire radar with a detection range of up to 400 kilometers.

SAMP/T NG is a joint development by France and Italy. The system is capable of intercepting ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as aircraft, and is viewed as a European alternative to the American Patriot system.

Following the agreement, Denmark will join France and Italy as the third EU country to operate this system. Meanwhile, seven EU member states currently use American Patriot systems.

The contract was signed amid European countries’ efforts to strengthen their own defense industries and reduce dependence on supplies from the United States.

As a reminder, France will provide Ukraine with an additional radar for the SAMP/T system while the current one is being repaired.

The possibility of deploying new SAMP/T systems in Ukraine as early as 2026 is also being considered, which should significantly strengthen air defense against Russian attacks.
