Hungary's state-run television channel apologized for years of anti-Ukraine propaganda

The Hungarian public television channel M1 has publicly apologized to viewers for years of spreading disinformation and propaganda, particularly regarding Ukraine. News broadcasts have been temporarily suspended while the broadcaster undergoes a transformation.

A statement aired on the channel noting that public media should not lie and offering an apology for years of spreading false information. The statement emphasized that the broadcaster will undergo reforms to become independent and credible.

According to the Hungarian publication Telex, during Viktor Orbán’s time in office, state media systematically broadcast propaganda narratives. After the outbreak of full-scale war, Kremlin disinformation was also disseminated on the airwaves, including referring to Ukraine as a “mafia state” and spreading false claims about the alleged forced mobilization of ethnic Hungarians.

Hungary has restored access to a number of Ukrainian news websites that had been blocked in response to reciprocal restrictions imposed by Kyiv. The decision marked a step toward partially unblocking the flow of information between the countries following the media conflict.

Hungary initiated the removal of wording regarding Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU from the final declaration of the European Union summit.
