In Finland, the number of syphilis and gonorrhea cases has decreased following the closure of the border with Russia
After Finland closed its eastern border with Russia, the country saw a decline in the number of syphilis and gonorrhea cases, which had previously been linked to travel to Russia.
According to Yle, Mika Gissler, a professor at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), noted that before the border closure, infections often entered the country through travel to Russia, particularly in connection with sex work.
According to him, this route has now effectively ceased to exist. At the same time, some citizens have begun traveling to other countries, such as Thailand, from which sexually transmitted infections may also be imported.
Last year, 329 cases of syphilis and about 2,100 cases of gonorrhea were reported in Finland.

As a reminder, Finland will allocate an additional 40 million euros to support Ukraine as part of the international PURL initiative. According to Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, these funds will be directed primarily toward strengthening air defense and protecting Ukrainians from Russian missile attacks.
Finland, in cooperation with NATO, is actively building up its own defense capabilities in response to Russia’s expansion of military bases and infrastructure in neighboring regions. This was stated by Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hykkänen.
