Nine EU countries want to cut off funding to the IOC because it allowed Russian athletes to compete

Nine European Union member states have called on the European Commission to review funding for the International Olympic Committee and sports organizations that allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions.

Estonia initiated the appeal. The countries called for the exclusion of the IOC and relevant federations from EU support programs due to their stance on allowing representatives from Russia and Belarus to compete.

Estonia initiated the appeal. It was joined by Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Finland, and Sweden.

In addition, these EU countries proposed reconsidering the participation of these sports federations in future discussions and events related to the development of sports in Europe.

This was reported with reference to ERR.

The European Commission is concerned about the IOC’s decision to allow Russian athletes to return.

Earlier, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine called the IOC’s decision to allow Russians to compete “shameful.”

Estonia, together with its partner countries, plans to appeal to the European Commission to review funding for sports organizations that support the return of Russia and Belarus to international competitions.

Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladislav Geraskevich called the International Olympic Committee’s decision to temporarily lift the ban on the Russian Olympic Committee’s activities “shameful.” The athlete stated that the IOC is ignoring the facts regarding the involvement of Russian sports organizations in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
