Two members of the British government have resigned and called on the prime minister to do the same
Junior members of the British government have resigned, calling on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down as leader of the Labour Party. The political crisis intensified after the party lost hundreds of seats in elections to local councils in England and the parliaments of Scotland and Wales.
This was reported by Sky News.
Parliamentary private secretaries Tom Rutland and Joe Morris stated that the head of government must set a clear timeline for electing a new leader to ensure the country’s stability. Currently, more than 50 Labour MPs have already openly called for a change in the party’s leadership. Despite the pressure, Keir Starmer has assured that he will continue to fight for the leadership to avoid chaos in the country.
It should be noted that internal party opposition intensified immediately after the announcement of the vote results last week. The Prime Minister called on supporters and voters to remain united and not to initiate proceedings to remove him. However, government officials who have resigned emphasize that a swift change of course is in the best interests of the British people.
Already, 41 Labour Party MPs have publicly called on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down as party leader.
Labour MP Catherine West has issued an ultimatum to the party leadership: if no minister declares a bid for the leadership by May 11, she will call for an election to choose a new party leader.
