Former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok won the ruling party's primary in the capital region

Former South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok won the Democratic Party’s primary in the Seoul metropolitan area, bringing him closer to victory in the election for the leadership of the ruling party, according to The Korea Herald.

Based on the results of the vote in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, Kim received 46.66% of the vote. His rival, Jeong Cheon-rae, who is seeking re-election for a second consecutive term as party leader, received 46.28%. Former Democratic Party Chairman Song Young-gil came in third with 7.06%.

Prior to this, Kim had won primary rounds in the central region of Chungcheong, Incheon, and Jeju Island, as well as in Gangwon Province, Daegu, North Gyeongsang Province, Gwangju, and the Jeolla provinces. Jeong won in Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province.

In the overall vote count, Kim Min-seok has 49.91%, while Jeong Cheon-rae has 41.51%. The Democratic Party’s new leader is set to be elected at the party’s national convention on Monday. The party leader will play a key role in overseeing the nomination of candidates for the 2028 parliamentary elections.
