Former SSNIT chair in Ghana calls for clarification on hotel sale complaint
In Ghana, Elizabeth Ohene, the former chair of the Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), called for clarification on the status of a complaint concerning alleged corruption in the planned disposal of a stake in hotels owned by the fund. She also criticized public comments by the head of the judiciary about SSNIT's activities.
As MyJoyOnline reports, Ohene chaired the SSNIT Board of Trustees from August 2021 until January 6, 2025. She responded to a video in which the head of the judiciary positively assessed the fund's current state and mentioned the period when SSNIT was considering the sale of the Labadi Beach Hotel, which he called a “valuable asset.”
Complaint to CHRAJ
According to Ohene, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the MP for North Tongu and current foreign minister, filed a complaint with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). The complaint contained serious corruption allegations against the SSNIT board and management in connection with the planned disposal of a 60% stake in the fund's hotels.

Ohene said that SSNIT, through its lawyers, submitted a detailed response to the petition, while the asset disposal process was suspended, she claims, in the interests of public peace and safety. At the same time, she noted that for more than two years, CHRAJ has not made public any information about the results of the investigation or whether the allegations were confirmed or dismissed.
Criticism of public statements
The former board chair said that the public accusations had damaged her reputation. In her view, serious suspicions should not remain without a conclusion, as this creates a situation of “punishment without a verdict” for the people concerned.
Ohene also expressed the view that the head of the judiciary should demonstrate not only actual independence, but also its visibility to the public. She called on him to inquire about the status of the complaint to CHRAJ and, if the corruption allegations are proven, to seek the referral of the case to court by the relevant authorities.
