Poland's former prime minister donated a Ukrainian medal to the Museum of the Volhynia Tragedy

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated that he had donated a Ukrainian Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise to the Museum of Remembrance for the Victims of the Volhynia Tragedy in the city of Chełm.

According to the politician, he made this decision as a sign of protest after one of the Ukrainian military units was named after the “heroes of the UPA.” Morawiecki stated that he is not returning the award to Ukraine, but is donating it to the museum as a symbol of remembrance for the victims of the Volhynia tragedy.

During a press conference, he also called on Polish authorities to strengthen legislation banning the promotion of symbols associated with “Banderaism” and to stop funding organizations that, in his view, glorify Ukrainian nationalists.

Along with Morawecki, MEP Michał Dworczyk also donated his Ukrainian award to the same museum. At the same time, he stated that Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation is possible only on the basis of historical truth.

The decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state award, from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not a unilateral act by the president. Under Polish procedure, the president may initiate the revocation of an award, but the relevant act requires the countersignature of the Polish prime minister.

In response to the Polish president’s actions, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that he would return his state award to Poland.
