The EU has no plans to lift tariffs on fertilizers from Russia and Belarus
The European Union has no intention of lifting restrictions on imports of Russian and Belarusian fertilizers, despite pressure from certain member states.
A high-ranking EU diplomat told Suspilne this, emphasizing that the current sanctions policy against the aggressor remains unchanged. According to the official, work will continue within the framework of the measures already in place, and no concessions on this issue are expected in the near future.
The decision to maintain tariffs is aimed at further limiting Russia’s revenues, which are used to finance the war. Belarus also remains subject to similar economic barriers due to its role in supporting Russian aggression. Despite concerns from some countries regarding the stability of the agricultural market, Brussels is prioritizing sanctions pressure on the enemy’s energy and raw materials sectors. The situation regarding fertilizer imports remains under constant monitoring by the relevant departments of the European Commission.
Prior to this, Hungarian Minister of Agriculture István Nagy officially appealed to European commissioners to suspend protective tariffs on fertilizer imports from Russia and Belarus.
U.S. Special Envoy John Cole stated that Belarus could play an important role in supplying potash fertilizers to the United States.
