The EU should not roll out the red carpet for Russian artists and athletes — Callas
Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that Russia must be completely isolated internationally, calling for action to prevent Russian propaganda from using sports and culture to whitewash its aggression. She emphasized that at a time when Russia is bombing cathedrals, Europe should not welcome artists and athletes who support the Kremlin’s war.
She made these remarks at a press conference following a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg. The head of European diplomacy called the performance by pro-Putin opera singer Anna Netrebko, which took place in Luxembourg on the day of the ministerial meeting, “very regrettable,” and noted Russia’s presence at the Venice Biennale.
According to her, without the adoption of a complete ban on performances by Russian artists at the EU level, each member state will continue to make decisions individually. Callas also added that foreign ministers approved further restrictions against the Russian military-industrial complex, the shadow fleet, and hybrid networks, and called for accelerating work on a broader 21st package of sanctions, which have already cost Russia over one trillion euros.
The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, will visit Ireland amid reports of activities by the Aughinish Alumina company, which exported alumina to Russia. The European Commission announced that during her visit to Dublin, Kallas will hold talks with Prime Minister Micheál Martin. The parties will discuss the situation surrounding the company and issues related to compliance with EU sanctions policy.
Kaja Kallas identified the Kremlin’s weak spot.
