The EU will strengthen security measures due to the risk of confidential information leaks

European Union diplomats and officials are calling for tighter security measures to prevent confidential data from falling into the hands of hostile nations. This has become a pressing issue following reports that Hungary shared sensitive information with Russia and possible attempts to intercept data in Germany.

This is reported by Politico.

EU representatives propose designating more documents as “classified,” which would entail strict oversight and automatic investigations in the event of a leak. Access to such files should be restricted to secure rooms within institutions, and the amount of intelligence information shared with lawmakers may be limited.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chair of the European Parliament’s Defense Committee, noted that classification must comply with national standards, including clear rules for vetting EU staff and personnel.

Brussels has already imposed restrictions on digital data, specifically banning the export of electronic devices to the US and China without prior data erasure. Some countries, such as Belgium, are switching to their own communication platforms instead of American apps.

The acceleration of security reforms in the EU may depend on the results of the elections in Hungary, as the re-election of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is friendly toward Russia, would create additional risks of information leaks.

Earlier, French intelligence released information about Russia’s large-scale espionage and sabotage activities against France.
