Latvia has issued an air threat warning for the second day in a row

UA NEWS 20 May 2026 10:48
Latvia has issued an air threat warning for the second day in a row

On the morning of May 20, warnings about a potential threat in the airspace were issued in the Krāslava, Ludza, and Rēzekne districts of Latvia. These danger alerts have been issued for the second day in a row following recent incidents involving drones near the Latvian border. No official details have been provided regarding the nature of the potential threat.

This is stated in a press release from the Latvian National Armed Forces.

As noted by the Latvian military, they are constantly monitoring the airspace together with their NATO allies to ensure the ability to respond immediately to a potential threat.

We have strengthened our air defense capabilities on the eastern border by deploying additional units there,” the Latvian Armed Forces stated.

The statement emphasizes that as long as Russian aggression in Ukraine continues, there is a possibility of repeated incidents where a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle enters or approaches Latvian airspace.

Earlier, the parties “Latvia First,” “National Alliance,” and “United List” called on Andris Spruds to step down following yet another drone incident on the country’s territory.

As a reminder, on May 7, Latvia detected new unidentified drones in its airspace that had flown in from Russian territory; one of them struck an oil depot in Rēzekne. It has not yet been confirmed whether these were Ukrainian or Russian drones.

The Latvian Prime Minister criticized the warning system following the crash of a drone from Russia.
