The EU is expanding sanctions against Iran over threats to shipping

The EU is expanding sanctions against Iran over threats to shipping

The European Union has expanded its sanctions regime against Iran, allowing restrictions to be imposed not only for supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine, but also for actions by Tehran that could threaten international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Individuals and entities associated with such actions may now be subject to sanctions.

The European Union has decided to broaden its approach to sanctions against Iran, adding a new category to the existing grounds: actions that threaten the safety of shipping on one of the world’s key maritime routes, the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the EU Council, this decision effectively broadens the scope of the sanctions regime, which was initially introduced in response to Iran’s military support for Russia in the war against Ukraine. Now, actions that could affect stability in the Middle East region are also included.

Officials in Brussels emphasize that restricting the movement of ships or interfering with transit through international straits violates international law and the principles of freedom of navigation. “Iran’s actions against ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz violate international law,” the EU Council stated.

Thanks to the updated legal framework, the European Union will be able to swiftly impose additional restrictions on individuals and organizations that may be involved in such incidents. This includes both travel bans to EU countries and asset freezes.

In addition, European citizens and companies are prohibited from providing financial resources or economic support to those on the sanctions lists.

The EU Council emphasizes that the decision implements a political agreement reached by EU foreign ministers during a meeting on April 21 and is aimed at protecting the freedom of international maritime navigation and stability in strategically important regions of the world.

Earlier, Iran announced a new “control” zone in the Persian Gulf, which, according to its version, partially covers the waters of the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi sharply rejected these claims, calling them unrealistic and provocative. Against this backdrop, tensions in the region have noticeably escalated again.

Trump is willing to wait a few more days for Iran to provide a proper response.
