The EU will allocate 220 million euros for the development of the South Caucasus

During her official visit to Baku, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the launch of new large-scale programs aimed at supporting peace and stability in the South Caucasus region. The initiative involves the allocation of a financial package to help modernize transportation and energy infrastructure, as well as support border communities.

Von der Leyen and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos discussed these plans in detail during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

The bulk of the funding under the “Peace through Connectivity” program will consist of grants totaling up to 200 million euros, which will help attract an additional 2 billion euros in private and public investments. Separately, the European Union will allocate 20 million euros for the humanitarian and social needs of local communities in the border regions of Armenia and Azerbaijan, including demining projects, healthcare development, and support for small businesses. Priority areas for cooperation include the development of a railway connection to Nakhchivan—for which a feasibility study has begun with the participation of the EBRD—as well as the organization of a major ministerial conference on investment, scheduled to take place in Baku by the end of 2026.
