German officials have stated that a Ukrainian national blew up the Nord Stream pipeline on behalf of the Ukrainian government
The German Federal Prosecutor's Office has officially charged Ukrainian Serhiy Kuznetsov in connection with the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. A statement from the office notes that he and other members of the group acted as Ukrainian military personnel.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the indictment was filed on June 30. Serhiy Kuznetsov, referred to in the documents as Serhiy K., is charged with complicity in a war crime, specifically an attack on civilian infrastructure.
The case file asserts that at the time of the events, Kuznetsov was a member of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and was not acting on his own initiative.
According to the German investigation, after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022, he, along with other military personnel and acting on behalf of Ukrainian government agencies, devised a plan to destroy the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.
“After Russia launched its war of aggression in late February 2022, he and other military personnel, acting on behalf of Ukrainian government agencies, developed a plan to destroy the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines… with the aim of permanently halting gas supplies through these pipelines and preventing Russia from using the revenue from gas sales to finance the war,” the statement noted.
The German prosecutor’s office also identifies Sergei Kuznetsov as the leader of the sabotage group that was dispatched to carry out this mission.
The circumstances of the case and the charges brought will be further examined by the court. As of the time of publication, the Ukrainian side had not officially commented on the German prosecutor’s office’s statements.
The investigation into the alleged sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines is now entering a new phase. The defense attorneys for Ukrainian soldier Sergei Kuznetsov reported that they had received the indictment from the German side just the day before. According to them, they now have about two months to thoroughly review the case materials and prepare their defense.
