France will resume diplomatic relations with Syria after a hiatus of more than 10 years

France will resume diplomatic relations with Syria after a hiatus of more than 10 years

France and Syria have agreed to return their ambassadors to their respective capitals and resume full diplomatic relations after a long period of strained ties.

Diplomatic ties between the two countries were effectively suspended more than ten years ago amid the events in Syria and the rule of Bashar al-Assad.

The reopening of the embassies is expected to mark a new phase in relations between Paris and Damascus and pave the way for further political dialogue.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is on his first visit to Damascus, and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced that they had agreed to appoint ambassadors to each other’s countries, thereby resuming diplomatic ties after a long hiatus.

Al-Sharaa called the meeting with Macron a “historic event.”

France closed its embassy in 2012 and symbolically reopened it in early 2025, shortly after the fall of the Assad regime.

This was reported by the Associated Press.

Macron arrived in Syria on an official visit for the first time.

As a reminder, the Syrian president met with Trump at the White House.

Syria announcedthat it had foiled several attempts by ISIS to assassinate President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
