The EU will allocate an additional €100 million to support the Lebanese army as a counterweight to Hezbollah
The European Union has agreed to provide an additional 100 million euros in financial aid to the Lebanese Armed Forces. Officials in Brussels view this step as the most effective way to counter and mitigate the threat posed by the radical Shiite group Hezbollah, which is based and operates within the country.
This was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on June 4, 2026.
According to the head of European diplomacy, the current ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon offers a real, albeit fragile, chance to avoid a resumption of full-scale hostilities in the region. At the same time, recent border clashes and the tragic death of a Serbian soldier serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) clearly demonstrate the fragility of the agreements reached.
Kaja Kallas clearly emphasized that the only reliable long-term solution for stabilizing the Middle East is a substantial strengthening of Lebanon’s state institutions, strengthening its sovereignty, and the mandatory restoration of the state’s full monopoly on the legitimate use of force and possession of weapons. The new aid package, approved by the EU Council under the European Peace Facility (EPF), will be aimed at improving logistical support, military training, border monitoring, maritime security, and strengthening the overall capacity of the Lebanese Army to protect the civilian population and counter non-state armed groups. With this tranche, the total amount of recent EU emergency aid to Lebanon has reached 182 million euros.

Earlier, Israel and Lebanon agreed to a ceasefire.
U.S. President Donald Trump officially confirmed reports that during a recent phone call, he called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “crazy” and cursed at him. The main reason for the American leader’s emotional outburst was the Israeli army’s latest escalation of hostilities in Lebanon, which threatened to derail Washington’s strategic negotiations with Tehran.
