On June 4, French-Iranian artist, comic book author, and director Marjane Satrapi died in Paris at the age of 56. Satrapi, together with artist Vincent Paranna, tells her own story through witty illustrations set against the backdrop of events in Iran. She also adapted this comic into an animated film in 2007, which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar.
The comic was published in Ukrainian by “Vydavnytstvo” in 2017.
Among Satrapi’s other well-known works is her graphic novel *Poulet aux prunes* (*Chicken with Prunes*), which she adapted for the screen along with Vincent Paronnaud, as well as the comedy horror film The Voices starring Ryan Reynolds and the 2019 film Radioactive about Marie Curie, starring Rosamund Pike.
Her latest comic book was the 2024 collection Woman, Life, Freedom. Two years before its release, she publicly supported the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, stating that the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement had become a cultural revolution.
In 2025, she declined the Legion of Honor, accusing France of “hypocrisy” in its relations with Iran.
