The Czech Prime Minister has asked Merz to lead negotiations with Russia regarding the war in Ukraine
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš believes that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz should take on the role of chief negotiator for the European Union in the search for ways to end Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The head of the Czech government made this statement ahead of the EU-Western Balkans summit.
According to Babiš, prolonging the war will not yield positive results, and Putin bears responsibility for its continuation. He also noted that U.S. President Donald Trump is currently more focused on events in the Middle East and issues of shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz.
“In my view, it is German Chancellor Merz who should somehow lead the diplomatic mission based on a mandate from the Council and the Commission,” Babiš stated.
In his view, Friedrich Merz could represent the European Union’s position in potential negotiations to end the war.
