The EU has imposed new sanctions following Navalny's death

The Council of the European Union has imposed sanctions on six Russian citizens believed to be involved in the development of chemical weapons, specifically the toxic substance epibatidine.

The EU stated that this specific substance was detected in samples taken from the body of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny after his death in a penal colony. According to the EU’s assessment, this indicates a high probability that his death was caused by poisoning.

Scientists and researchers linked to Russia’s chemical weapons program have been targeted by the sanctions. Among them are Igor Babkin, head of the laboratory at the “Signal” Scientific Center, as well as employees of the State Research Institute of Organic Chemistry and Technology and the Russian Federation’s Military Academy of Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection.

In total, the EU sanctions regime regarding the use and proliferation of chemical weapons now covers 31 individuals and six organizations.

All individuals on the list will have their assets frozen in EU countries, will be barred from entering the EU, and will be prohibited from receiving any funds or economic resources.
