European Commissioner Kos went kayaking on the Dniester River during her visit to Moldova

As part of her official visit to Moldova, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marti Kos was treated to a diplomatic kayaking trip down the Dniester River. Despite challenging weather conditions, organizers decided not to cancel the event, combining the informal outing with a discussion of critical environmental issues

The trip took place on the final day of the European official’s stay in the country. Together with Moldova’s Minister of the Environment, Gheorghe Hăjeri, the European Commissioner covered a river route of about 4.5 kilometers. The section of the Dniester River between the villages of Slobozia-Dusca and Onitscan, located near the capital Chisinau, was chosen for the river crossing.

The press service of the Moldovan Ministry of the Environment released photos of the event, and Minister Gheorghe Hădjer offered a symbolic comment on the joint trip. According to him, rain and strong winds could not stop the team, and they continued to paddle down the river with the same determination with which Moldova is now moving toward European Union membership. After completing the physical part of the rafting trip, a traditional lunch of fish soup and hot tea was organized on the banks of the Dniester for the foreign guest and participants.

Despite the informal nature of the outing, it had a serious working basis. The relevant ministry noted that during the visit, Marta Kos and Gheorghe Hager discussed in detail the large-scale problem of pollution in the Dniester ecosystem, which has worsened following Russian strikes on hydropower infrastructure in Ukraine. The Moldovan minister officially expressed his gratitude to the European Commissioner for the financial and expert support that the European Union is providing to address the consequences of these cross-border environmental challenges.

This was reported by the Moldovan publication Newsmaker.

All European Union countries have agreed to begin negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on opening the first chapter on the path to EU accession. This means that the process is officially moving into the practical phase, and the countries are one step closer to membership.

France and Germany are proposing to accelerate the integration of Moldova and the Balkans into the EU.
