Europe must stand behind Ukraine in peace negotiations, the German Foreign Ministry says
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stressed that Ukraine should not be left alone to decide how to end the war. Europe acts as Ukraine’s advocate and is ready to support it in negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the conflict.
Wadephul made this statement on 25 November at the Foreign Policy Forum in Berlin.
He described the negotiations in Geneva as “good” and noted the United States’ readiness to develop a peace proposal. He stressed the importance of increasing economic pressure on Russia, particularly through the use of frozen assets, and reiterated the need for a fair and sustainable ceasefire.
The minister noted that the first steps towards peace depend on the aggressor, but said that Europe is ready to increase the political and economic cost for Russia by providing support to Ukraine even in difficult legal and financial negotiations.
The U.S. peace plan to end the war in Ukraine was reduced from 28 to 19 points as a result of negotiations in Geneva.
As a reminder, in Geneva — one of Switzerland’s main diplomatic centres — consultations have begun with the Ukrainian delegation, which is working to agree on a peace plan to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.
