Trump called an emergency meeting in response to Iran's ultimatum

U.S. President Donald Trump convened an emergency meeting in the White House Situation Room due to the threat of renewed war with Iran. The risk of large-scale hostilities next week arose following Tehran’s announcement that it would close the Strait of Hormuz and attack ships.

Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and heads of relevant departments attended the meeting on April 18. The escalation occurred less than a day after Trump’s predictions of a swift signing of a peace agreement. The U.S. president told reporters in the Oval Office that the country would not allow itself to be blackmailed, despite Iran’s attempts to close the strait again.

Tehran is currently reviewing new U.S. proposals, conveyed through Pakistani mediation, particularly regarding its nuclear program and stockpiles of enriched uranium. The current ceasefire is set to expire in three days, making a diplomatic breakthrough critical to avoiding an escalation. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed receipt of Washington’s proposals but has not yet provided a final response.

Alongside tensions in the Middle East, the U.S. continues to monitor Russia’s actions and other global threats. By the end of the day, it should become clear whether the parties will agree to the terms of a new deal to stabilize the region. Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, who is serving as the primary mediator, is playing a key role in the negotiation process. Trump noted that Washington is committed to negotiations but is preparing for any possible outcome should diplomacy fail.
