Ukraine has called on the U.S. to reinstate oil sanctions against Russia

Ukraine has called on the U.S. to reinstate oil sanctions against Russia

Olga Stefanishyna, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, has called on the U.S. administration to reinstate restrictions on trade in Russian oil and petroleum products. She emphasized that it is unacceptable for an aggressor nation to derive financial benefit from the actions of its ally, Iran.

The diplomat wrote about this on social media.

According to Olga Stefanishyna, reinstating sanctions is in the mutual interest of Kyiv and Washington, as it will limit the resources Russia uses to attack Ukraine and support U.S. adversaries. She warned that a lack of a firm response to the destabilization of the world order will lead to new global problems. The ambassador also noted that the Russian side is already interpreting the easing of sanctions as a form of “cooperation.”

The Ukrainian Embassy’s statement came amid the U.S. Treasury Department’s decision to issue a new license temporarily allowing transactions involving Russian oil to alleviate shortages in the global market. Official Kyiv insists that any easing of pressure only encourages the Kremlin to further escalate the conflict. The Ukrainian side continues negotiations with partners to strengthen the economic isolation of the aggressor and cut off funding for the war.

The U.S. has decided to extend the exemption from sanctions on Russian oil—which had already been loaded onto tankers and was at sea—for another 30 days.

Ukraine and a number of countries supported the EU’s new sanctions against Russia.
