Finland has decided not to open its border with Russia

Finland has decided not to open its border with Russia

The Finnish government has officially extended the decision to completely close all land border crossing points on the state border with the Russian Federation.

Finland first introduced strict restrictions on its eastern border in late 2023 in response to a migration crisis artificially provoked by the Kremlin.

After the brief reopening of several checkpoints in the winter of 2024, hybrid pressure from Russia resumed, forcing Helsinki to close the checkpoints permanently. Finnish border guards were also granted the legal right to reject asylum applications directly at the closed border.

The Finnish government emphasizes that the implemented security measures have proven highly effective, as the artificial influx of illegal migrants has now been completely halted. However, due to ongoing potential security risks, the restrictions will remain in place, and the Cabinet of Ministers promises to review the decision from time to time in close cooperation with the country’s relevant law enforcement and defense agencies.

The Finnish Air Force will conduct special exercises to repel drone attacks in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, as well as in the Kymenlaakso and South Karelia regions, which border Russia.

A delegation from the Helsinki Fire and Rescue Department in Finland spent four days studying the experience of Ukrainian rescue workers in dealing with the aftermath of war.
