France is launching an investigation into Israel's actions regarding the humanitarian flotilla

France has decided to ask the prosecutor’s office to investigate the actions of Israeli forces against participants in the humanitarian flotilla that was heading to the Gaza Strip with aid. Officials in Paris have cited possible instances of mistreatment of activists, and the case has already been referred for legal review. The French government’s decision marks one of the strongest diplomatic moves in recent weeks and could lead to a criminal investigation, according to the AP.

The French government will officially ask the prosecutor’s office to investigate whether the Israeli side’s actions constitute criminal offenses against the participants of the humanitarian mission. This refers to the flotilla that was heading to the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid. According to French diplomats, serious human rights violations may have occurred during this operation.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that he had received a report from diplomats in Turkey describing shocking incidents of mistreatment of French citizens. According to him, the report mentions “sexual violence, hypothermia, beatings, and repeated humiliation of French citizens—all of which may constitute criminal offenses.”

France has already taken another high-profile step—imposing an indefinite entry ban on Israel’s far-right Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir. Paris explains this as a reaction to his behavior toward activists on the humanitarian flotilla. In effect, this means that diplomatic pressure from France is intensifying on several fronts—both political and legal.

The case is now being referred to the French prosecutor’s office, which must determine whether there are grounds to open a criminal investigation. As Minister Jean-Noël Barrot noted, the decision has already been made: “Yesterday I decided to refer this case to the prosecutor’s office. The case is now in the hands of the justice system.” The investigation could become one of the key international proceedings surrounding the humanitarian mission to Gaza and trigger a new wave of diplomatic reactions between Paris and Tel Aviv.
