Ghanaian battalion returns from UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon
In Ghana, GHANBATT 92 returned after a year-long peacekeeping mission as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Ghana’s Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, declared the operation completed during a ceremony welcoming the military personnel at the parade ground of the 5th Infantry Battalion, MyJoyOnline reports.
Service under shelling
The contingent comprised 615 service members, including 103 women. According to Gbetanu, the battalion operated in southern Lebanon amid intensified confrontation between Hezbollah and the Israel Defense Forces, which increased risks for UN peacekeepers. The unit came under attack at its positions but continued to carry out the UN mandate and protect civilians in its area of responsibility.
One of the most serious incidents was shelling on March 6, Ghana’s 69th Independence Day. Two rockets then struck the battalion headquarters in Al-Kawzi during intense shelling. The attack damaged important infrastructure, and some Ghanaian military personnel were injured. The base was under a serious security threat for some time.

Leave and psychological support
The major general said that post-mission leave for all GHANBATT 92 personnel had been extended from 30 to 42 days. According to him, the additional time is intended to give service members an opportunity to rest, recover, and return to their families and units. The army also plans to monitor their well-being and provide psychological support.
GHANBATT 92 commander Lieutenant Colonel Evans Yaw Mensa Komejah linked the battalion’s ability to operate in difficult conditions to approximately nine months of training at the Bundase training camp. According to him, personnel remained calm during the March 6 attack because they had previously experienced shelling and practiced actions in such situations. Equipment destroyed in the strike was promptly replenished, allowing the unit to continue operations.
During the mission, the battalion fortified positions, protected vulnerable civilians, repaired damaged infrastructure, and carried out humanitarian work. In particular, the military reroofed the entire Al-Jafar block to secure the unit’s tactical operations center.
