Hegset to Fire Top U.S. General in Charge of Aid to Ukraine — FT

General Christopher Donaghy, commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, will soon leave military service. According to U.S. media reports, his resignation comes amid sweeping personnel changes at the U.S. Department of Defense being carried out by Pentagon chief Pete Hagseth.

According to sources, Donaghy will officially end his service as early as July and is expected to announce his decision in the coming days.

Four-star General Christopher Donaghy is considered one of the key U.S. military figures who coordinated assistance to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

He has extensive combat experience, having participated in operations in Iraq, Syria, and other hotspots. Donaghy also made history as the last U.S. service member to leave Afghanistan during the conclusion of the U.S. mission in 2021.

There are currently no official explanations for the general’s removal. At the same time, it is known that U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset is carrying out a large-scale reshuffle of the department’s leadership.

It is noted that the Pentagon chief had previously repeatedly criticized the actions of former U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration during the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan and initiated an investigation into the circumstances of that operation.

Christopher Donahue’s resignation marks another step in the U.S. Department of Defense’s sweeping personnel reform. Experts note that the general was one of the key figures in the U.S. military presence in Europe and an important participant in the process of coordinating aid to Ukraine.

Further personnel decisions by the Pentagon could affect both the structure of the U.S. armed forces and the mechanisms for providing military support to U.S. allies around the world.

This was reported by the Financial Times.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of Defense carried out a large-scale reform of the system for recording service members’ religious affiliations, reducing the official list of religions by 180 entries.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagseth, speaking at the Shangri-La Dialoguein Singapore, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hagseth stated that the Pentagon will ramp up weapons production and restructure the defense industry on a significantly larger scale, which in the future will allow for substantially greater support for Ukraine across all key areas.
