A humpback whale that had been rescued in Germany was found dead off the coast of Denmark
A humpback whale that rescue teams had tried to save two weeks ago during a large-scale operation in Germany was found dead off the coast of Denmark.
This was reported by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.
The mammal was discovered near the island of Angholt in the strait between Denmark and Sweden. Initially, there was no confirmation that it was the same whale, but this was established after further verification.
According to agency representative Jane Hansen, the animal was identified thanks to a tracking device that remained attached to the whale’s back after the rescue operation in German waters.
The dead whale was discovered on May 14. The cause of death has not yet been reported.
In Germany, it is speculated that the humpback whale, whose rescue was followed by the entire country, may have died, though there is no official confirmation at this time.
In Washington State, USA, a young gray whale was found dead after swimming more than 30 km up the Willapa River.
