Polymarket users threatened journalist over article about rocket strike in Israel
Journalist Fabian, who reported on a rocket explosion in Beit Shemesh, Israel on March 10, began receiving threats from unknown individuals through WhatsApp and phone calls. The threats demanded he change his article to influence bets on the Polymarket platform, with a potential payout close to $900,000.
Initially, Fabian stated the rocket landed in an open area with no casualties. However, on the same day, he received letters insisting the rocket was of a different type or had been intercepted. Later, forged screenshots supposedly showing his responses were circulated.
Subsequently, the journalist faced direct threats from individuals identifying themselves as Haim or a lawyer, hinting at physical harm if he did not alter the article, as well as possible manipulations of bets on Polymarket.
Polymarket is a prediction market platform focusing on global events, including political and economic topics. It enables users to place bets on various outcomes and potentially earn significant winnings.
This case raises serious concerns about journalist safety and transparency on betting platforms. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the threats against Fabian.
The situation highlights how digital platforms can become arenas for pressuring journalists and interfering with freedom of expression, underlining the need for ongoing vigilance and protection of media rights.
