Abia Governor Otti says he survived an assassination attempt in 2015 — Premium Times Nigeria

Abia State Governor in Nigeria Alex Otti said that in July 2015 he survived an assassination attempt on his life in Abuja. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the politician spoke about the incident during a covenant renewal service in the city of Umuahia.

According to Otti, in 2015 he was challenging before an election tribunal the results of the gubernatorial election, in which People’s Democratic Party candidate Okezie Ikpeazu was declared the winner. At the time, the politician was in Abuja and was trying to hold a meeting that had been repeatedly postponed.

Otti said that he decided to fly to Owerri the following day, despite objections from friends. He claimed that that night, attackers raided his residence in the Maitama district, shot dead two police officers and were looking for him. The governor also said that the attackers did not find him in the house, after which they moved to a neighboring building and searched it.

The politician called his departure from Abuja divine intervention. He claimed that he had no obvious reason to leave the city at that particular time.

Otti also said that friends had tried to dissuade him from politics and advised him to seek protection through traditional practices or join certain societies. According to him, he rejected such advice because he links his choice to serving God. The governor cited the biblical verse Joshua 24:15.

The event in Umuahia was organized by the Abia State government under the theme “Remembering the Covenant.” It was attended by Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, other officials and clergy representatives. The program included prayers, worship services and addresses by clergymen.
