A goose alerted a family to a fire in a barn in Texas
In Fort Bend County, Texas, a four-month-old pet goose nicknamed Goose woke up the Herber family with its honking when a fire broke out in their barn. Homeowner Bert Herber was able to put out the fire, and all the animals inside the building were safe and unharmed, according to The Guardian World.
The fire broke out on the morning of August 4. A home security camera captured the flames in the barn, where the family kept several animals, including chickens and turkeys. At around the 40-second mark of the recording, the goose came out of the building and began honking repeatedly as it paced back and forth near the barn.
Bert Herber heard the noise; he said he had been sleeping on the couch after watching TV late into the night. He went outside, saw flames bursting from the barn, grabbed a garden hose, and ran to put out the fire.

According to Bert Herber, just a few more minutes of sleep could have caused the fire to get out of control. After the fire was extinguished, it turned out that all the animals in the barn were safe.
Bert’s wife, Chelsea Herber, said the family adopted Goose on Mother’s Day after their daughter saw the bird at a poultry show. After reviewing the security camera footage, the family, she said, was amazed by the goose’s actions and is very grateful to him. Chelsea Herber called the decision to bring the bird home a significant one, since, in her estimation, four months later, he saved their farm.
