Guterres condemns glorification of Mladić in the US — Balkan Insight
UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, United States, condemned the glorification of convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal Ratko Mladić during a meeting with Denis Bećirović, chairman of the tripartite Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Guterres' statement
The interlocutors discussed international law, regional stability and current challenges for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Guterres also raised the issue of recent revisionist actions and genocide denial in Bosnia, calling this a direct violation of international legal and civilizational norms.
Following the conversation, Guterres stated that the UN consistently opposes historical revisionism and the glorification of war criminals, as this threatens reconciliation efforts. He stressed the need to respect international law and civilizational standards in order to preserve regional stability.

Resolution on Srebrenica
A separate topic was the implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution on the Srebrenica genocide, adopted in 2024, as well as countering historical revisionism in the region. Bećirović invited Guterres to visit Sarajevo and the Srebrenica Memorial Center.
The chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina stressed the importance of permanent international educational programs dedicated to the 1995 genocide. According to him, such programs should prevent further historical revisionism and protect the historical truth established by international courts.
Mladić's funeral in Belgrade on September 7 was held with military honors. Ministers and senior officials from Serbia and Republika Srpska—an entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina—took part. EU representatives condemned the government of Serbia, which is a candidate country for accession to the bloc, over the glorification of Mladić, calling it incompatible with the values of the European Union.
