In Israel, the newspaper Haaretz said in an editorial that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has brought the country’s standing in the United States to an “unprecedented low.” This was reported by Anadolu Agency.

Criticism of the political course

Haaretz noted that warnings about a crisis in Israel’s strategic relations with its most important ally, the United States, had been voiced for many years. The publication believes that Netanyahu and his government ignored these warnings.

The newspaper also linked the collapse in Israel’s standing among Democrats to what it called Netanyahu’s open interference in American politics in favor of President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Criticism among Republicans

According to Haaretz, over the past two years, the government of Netanyahu, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich has brought attitudes toward Israel among Republicans to a new low. The publication linked this, in particular, to the war in Iran and the subsequent sharp rise in gas prices, violence by extremist settlers against Palestinians, as well as harm to Christian communities in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Haaretz referred to U.S. polls from recent months which, according to the newspaper, show a sharp and unprecedented decline in positive attitudes toward Israel, especially among younger respondents. The publication stressed that no high-profile speech by Netanyahu at the UN General Assembly would be able to conceal this reality and warned of consequences for the future relations between the two countries.
