Indonesia has distanced itself from citizens fighting on Russia's side
Indonesian authorities have stated that the possible participation of its citizens in the war on Russia’s side does not reflect Jakarta’s official position.
Indonesia has launched an investigation into reports that some of its citizens may have joined the Russian army. Authorities are also looking into whether they might have been recruited under the pretext of employment.
Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewenkang stated that further verification is currently needed to confirm the identities of these individuals, their citizenship, the circumstances of their recruitment, and the nature of their possible participation in the war.
The investigation is being conducted through Indonesian diplomatic missions and in coordination with relevant ministries and government agencies.
At the same time, Jakarta has already distanced itself from the possible participation of its citizens in the war on Russia’s side.
“If there are Indonesian citizens who have fallen victim to this process, the Indonesian government will take the necessary protective measures in accordance with applicable law,” Yvonne emphasized.
Indonesia Investigates Possible Fraud
Separately, the country’s authorities intend to determine whether Indonesians have fallen victim to fraud, exploitation, or recruitment under the pretext of employment.
This refers to situations where a person may be offered a job that actually involves participation in military activities.
“If there are Indonesian citizens who are victims of such practices, the Indonesian government will take the necessary protective measures in accordance with applicable law,” the Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated.
Indonesia also has legal provisions regarding the participation of citizens in the military service of foreign states. These provisions, in particular, outline possible consequences for citizenship. However, decisions must be made based on verified facts and in accordance with the law.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged citizens to exercise caution regarding job offers in conflict zones and any proposals that may involve military activities on behalf of another state.
As a reminder, Russia is recruiting Indonesians to fight in the war against Ukraine.
Additionally, Indonesia has stepped up its efforts to combat forest fires and smog.
