Possible air threat warning issued in Latvia’s Ludza Municipality
Latvia’s National Armed Forces (NBS) warned residents of Ludza Municipality about a possible threat in the country’s airspace. Messages were sent to residents’ mobile phones through the cell broadcast system, LSM English reports.
Alert levels
The Latvian military uses a two-level cell broadcast system to inform the public about threats in the airspace. The yellow level is informational: it does not require immediate action, but urges people to be mindful of possible danger.
The orange level is used in the event of a confirmed threat in the airspace. Such a message requires immediate action in accordance with the instructions provided.

Instructions for the public
People in the area covered by the warning are advised to find a place indoors that is separated from the exterior of the building by at least two walls. Those in a car should assess the situation: continue driving to a safe place or leave the vehicle, move away from the road and seek the nearest shelter.
If an explosion is heard, people must remain indoors and stay away from windows and doors. After an explosion, they should not go outside until receiving a message from emergency services or for at least 10 minutes after the last explosion.
The NBS also urge people not to post photos and videos on social media in order to avoid spreading disinformation and revealing defence positions. People are advised to head to a shelter, including a basement or bomb shelter, only when the early warning system indicates such a need. Those outside the warning area are recommended to follow the instructions of the relevant authorities and contact relatives who are in the area covered by the message.
