Iran has threatened the U.S. over an operation in the Strait of Hormuz — The Times of Israel

Tehran has stated that any U.S. interference in the new shipping regime in the Strait of Hormuz will be regarded as a violation of the ceasefire. This statement came after Washington announced the launch of a ship escort operation.

The Times of Israel reported this on Monday, May 4.

Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Committee, wrote on social media:

“Any American interference in the new maritime regime of the Strait of Hormuz will be considered a violation of the ceasefire,” he warned.

The day before, Trump announced Operation “Project Freedom”—U.S. forces will escort ships stranded in the blockade zone through the strait.

The president warned that any interference in this operation “will have to be resolved by force.”

The ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran has been in effect since April 8, but the strait remains effectively closed. Previously, about 20% of the world’s oil and gas production passed through it.

As a reminder, Germany is demanding that Iran immediately open the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has announced a plan for strict control over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil passes. Ships from “hostile countries” may be allowed passage only after paying compensation.

The Iranian government has decided to cut oil production due to the U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which has significantly limited its trade capabilities. At the same time, Tehran was prepared in advance for developments following this scenario.
