Iran is imposing a fee on internet traffic transiting through the Strait of Hormuz — CNN
Following the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian government intends to take full control of the undersea communication cables laid along the seabed of this strategic waterway.
Enormous volumes of global internet traffic pass through this infrastructure between countries in Europe, Asia, and the Persian Gulf, including confidential data on financial transactions.
Such reports began appearing en masse in Iranian media outlets linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a development officially noted by the American television network CNN.
Official Tehran plans to radically change the rules of the game in the global telecommunications market and monetize its geographical position.
In particular, the reports state that Tehran intends to require companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon to pay for the use of internet cables.
In addition, new strict financial and regulatory restrictions on capital construction will be imposed on foreign investors and providers.
The military leadership of the Islamic Republic has already confirmed these intentions regarding control over international communication corridors.
A licensing fee will be introduced for the laying of new communication lines, and only Iranian firms will be allowed to maintain them.
“We will charge a fee for internet cables,” confirmed Ibrahim Zolfaghari, a representative of the Iranian military, in response to media reports.
