Iran war exposes Dubai's fragile facade of safety

The magazine Time, in its article "Iranian War Shattered Dubai's Liberal Facade," reports how Dubai, known as "the safest city in the world," has confronted harsh realities following drone and missile strikes, prompting authorities to impose strict censorship and mass arrests.

Three survivors of an attack on a residential tower in the Creek Harbour area were detained for sharing photos of their home in private messages. In total, 21 people were arrested for spreading news about the attacks in closed groups. Violators risk deportation, jail sentences up to two years, and fines ranging from 20,000 to 200,000 dirhams (approximately $54,500).

According to the human rights organization Detained in Dubai, hundreds have been arrested in the UAE since the conflict began, ranging from cleaners to millionaires. The UAE’s population exceeds four million, with 85% foreigners, about 60% of them South Asians, almost half originating from Kerala, India.

This situation starkly contrasts with Dubai’s image as an open and secure city, known for its growth in tourism and business, and as a financial and cultural hub of the Middle East.

Thus, the Iran conflict has significantly impacted the UAE’s internal political climate, leading to restrictions on freedoms and tighter population control. The future depends on how long regional tensions persist and how the authorities respond to internal criticism.
