A Spanish fighter jet shot down a drone in Romanian airspace
A Spanish F-18 fighter jet participating in a NATO mission shot down a drone that had violated Romanian airspace near the borders with Ukraine and Moldova. This was reported by the Romanian Ministry of Defense, according to France 24.
According to the ministry, the drone entered Romanian airspace from Moldova. It was intercepted at 5:01 a.m. local time (2:01 a.m. GMT). The drone’s wreckage fell in an uninhabited area of the Galați region near the Ukrainian border.

Romania’s eastern Black Sea coast is located near areas that are frequently targeted. Since 2023, Romanian authorities have repeatedly reported finding drone debris on the country’s territory following attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube.
Last month, for the first time since Russia—the aggressor state—invaded Ukraine in 2022, Romania shot down a drone that had entered its airspace approximately 100 kilometers from Bucharest. Similar incidents have also been recorded in Poland and the Baltic states. On Friday, NATO reported that Italian fighter jets, as part of the Alliance’s air patrol mission, shot down a drone that had entered Latvian airspace.
