Italy supports Ukraine's full membership in the EU — Tajani

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that Ukraine’s international standing must be strengthened as much as possible to ensure its successful European integration.

The head of the Foreign Ministry officially confirmed that his country fully supports granting Ukraine full membership in the European Union.

To achieve this strategic goal, European partners need to jointly develop and implement a clear roadmap.

The Italian official made this statement immediately before the start of the official meeting of the Alliance’s foreign ministers, which took place in the Swedish city of Helsingborg.

Rome is demonstrating a consistent Euro-Atlantic stance and is ready to take more active steps to integrate new partners into the European community.

In parallel with the Ukrainian track, the Italian side is also considering the issue of expanding the bloc to include countries in the Balkan region.

“Regarding Ukraine, we must do what is necessary to strengthen Ukraine’s position. We support Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union, but we need to chart a path toward achieving this goal,” Tajani stated.

The Italian diplomat separately emphasized the need for strict adherence to established pan-European regulations and standards during the enlargement process.

Italy’s goal remains to create a stable and secure space on the continent by bringing new members into political institutions.

The minister added that Italy is ready to “do more to ensure compliance with European rules,” and that the goal is “full EU membership for Ukraine alongside the countries of the Western Balkans.”

During his speech, the head of the Italian Foreign Ministry elaborated on the global role of the North Atlantic Alliance in the modern architecture of global security.

In his view, the organization not only performs defensive functions but also serves as a powerful platform for coordinating international policy.

Without strong coordination within the defense bloc, it will be impossible to guarantee long-term peace on the European continent.

“NATO is critically important. It is not just a military alliance; it is a political alliance. NATO is crucial for peace. Without NATO, it will be difficult to strengthen peace in the world,” he said.

Antonio Tajani assured his international colleagues that Italy remains a “strong supporter of NATO” and plans to gradually increase its financial contributions to the defense industry.

The current geopolitical situation requires European countries to build a stronger and more independent defense capability that will strengthen the Alliance.

The strategic security of the Western world must be based on equal and effective cooperation between two key geographical centers of influence.
