Callas has appointed the former Dutch defense minister as head of the EU diplomatic service

The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced personnel changes at the European External Action Service. The agency’s new Secretary-General will be former Dutch Minister of Defense Kaja Ollongren.

Ollongren will assume her duties on September 1. Previously, she served as Deputy Prime Minister and headed the Dutch Ministries of the Interior and Defense; she currently serves as the EU Special Representative for Human Rights.

Estonian diplomat Matti Maasikas, who previously headed the EU Delegation to Ukraine, will become Deputy Secretary General for Geoeconomics and Interinstitutional Relations.

In addition, David Kwasch, France’s ambassador to NATO, has been nominated for the position of Deputy Secretary-General for Peace, Security, and Defense.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during which the parties discussed Ukraine’s integration into the European Union and strengthening the protection of Ukrainian airspace.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated that she hopes for the swift adoption of the 21st package of sanctions against Russia. According to her, the European Union must continue to increase pressure on Moscow. Support for Ukraine remains one of the main topics of the EU leaders’ summit.
