Lithuania has received the first tranche under the EU's SAFE defense program
Lithuania has received the first tranche of 956 million euros as part of the European SAFE defense lending program.
The funds received represent 15% of the total €6.375 billion loan the country is counting on. The funding is expected to help meet about half of the needs for establishing and equipping a national division.
According to Lithuanian Finance Minister Kristupas Vaiteikūnas, the country was among the first to complete all necessary procedures and sign agreements under the SAFE program.
The funds are planned to be allocated to the development of air defense systems and artillery, as well as the procurement of howitzers, ammunition, and other weapons for the Lithuanian army. Part of the funding may also be used to support Ukraine.
