Latvia plans to deploy additional air defense systems and radars along its eastern border

The Latvian Ministry of Defense will soon deploy additional air defense systems to strengthen the protection of the country’s eastern border.

According to him, a meeting of the Military Council and a meeting with local government leaders from border regions took place behind closed doors on June 25.

Melnis noted that work is ongoing to determine the placement of additional radars and air defense systems.

He emphasized that it is impossible to completely prevent drone incursions, but Latvia is working to improve the effectiveness of its air defense system and airspace security.

The minister also acknowledged that lengthy procurement procedures and the time required to implement the systems remain a challenge, but solutions have already been found to accelerate the deployment of the necessary equipment.

Separately, Melnis underscored the importance of integrating technology and training personnel, noting the contribution of Ukrainian allies in this process.

During the discussion, participants also addressed the issues of fortifying the land border with engineering measures, the exchange of classified information between government agencies, and the organization of public warning systems, communications, and shelters in the event of emergencies.

This was reported by Defense Minister Raivis Melnis, as quoted by LSM.

Earlier, the NATO North Atlantic Council held an emergency meeting dedicated to the security situation in the Black Sea region. The allies paid particular attention to incidents involving drones that flew into Romanian territory from the combat zone. The official meeting was convened at Bucharest’s initiative following two serious incidents that threatened the safety of the civilian population.

NATO will strengthen Turkey’s air defense system. As part of the Alliance’s defense plan, the Italian SAMP/T system will be deployed in the country. It will be stationed in central Turkey, though no exact timeline has been announced yet.
