Maduro calls civilians to arms amid fears of U.S. intervention

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced sweeping military exercises and a national mobilization this week, urging civilians to take up arms in defense of the homeland. The move follows increased U.S. military activity in the Caribbean, which Washington says targets drug networks but which analysts believe is meant to pressure Maduro’s government.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López warned citizens to “prepare for the worst,” calling the situation a “serious threat” from the United States. State TV aired footage of militia drills and evacuation exercises as part of a national campaign to project strength and unity.

Experts, however, remain skeptical. Venezuela’s equipment is outdated, and its mobilization appears more symbolic than strategic, aimed at rallying domestic support rather than deterring U.S. power. Still, Maduro’s message is clear: his regime is bracing for confrontation and using military imagery to reinforce control at home.
