Qatar calls for regional security framework with Iran — Anadolu Agency

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, speaking in New York, United States, called for the creation of a regional security framework involving the Gulf states and Iran. He said the recent war should serve as a wake-up call for the region to pursue more active cooperation, Anadolu Agency reports.

Regional security framework

Al Thani spoke at the Qatar Economic Forum, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. According to him, the recent regional crisis has called into question perceptions of security and stability, while its consequences have extended beyond the region.

The head of Qatar’s government stressed that Iran is a neighbor of the Gulf states. In his view, a mechanism is needed that would bring together the Gulf countries and Iran and ensure that neither side poses a threat to the other.

He added that the countries of the region need to act responsibly together, maintain good relations with Iran and ensure good relations between Tehran and the Gulf states. According to Al Thani, Qatar and its regional partners are already working on such a format.

Investment plans

Separately, Al Thani announced the launch of the Doha Investment platform, which will manage and expand the domestic portfolio of the Qatar Investment Authority, as well as increase private-sector participation. Qatar plans to put infrastructure projects worth approximately $38.5 billion out to tender over the next five years.

Projects in real estate and hospitality are expected to attract $22.5 billion in private investment. The total potential value of these plans exceeds $60 billion.
